DJプレミア（DJ Premier、本名：Christopher Edward Martin[1]、1966年3月21日[2] - ）は、アメリカの音楽プロデューサー、DJ。ヒップホップ・デュオ「ギャング・スター」のメンバー。「ブーム・バップ」および「ジャズ・ラップ」の先駆者として知られる。愛称は、プリモ（Preemo）[1][3]。テキサス州ヒューストン出身。

略歴

生い立ち

ともに教師であるサウスカロライナ州出身の父とメリーランド州ボルチモア出身の母との間にテキサス州ヒューストンで生まれる[4]。祖父に連れられてタイムズスクエアに訪れた際に、Bボーイのグループである「ロックステディ・クルー」のブレイクダンスに魅了され、ヒップホップと出会う[4]。その後、映画『フラッシュダンス』や『ワイルド・スタイル』といった作品の影響を受けて、ヒップホップを自身の職業とする決心をする[4]。祖父からは、「ヒップホップなんてうまくいかない」などと苦言を呈されていたが、これに反抗して"Told you I was gonna do it"（やるって言っただろ）というタトゥーを腕に入れる[4]。

ヒューストン郊外にあるプレーリー・ビューA&M大学に入学し、コンピュータ・サイエンスを学ぶ[5]。大学ではキャンパスDJとして音楽の腕を磨き、マーチング・ストーム・バンドとも共演した[6]。大学の友人とともにヒップホップグループ「MCs In Control」を結成[4]。クラスメイトが所有していたターンテーブル（TechnicsのSL-1200）を拝借し、DJとしての技術を鍛錬しながら、自身のファーストネームの頭文字にちなみ「Waxmaster C」と名乗る。

ギャング・スター加入

レコード会社のWild Pitchへデモテープを送ると、当時すでにギャング・スターのメンバーとして活動していたグールーがこのデモテープを偶然聴いて感銘を受け、グールーに誘われる形で1989年にギャング・スターに加入。テキサスからレンタカーのトラックに大量のレコードを詰め込んでグールーの住むアパートに移住し、Wild Pitchの社長からは改名を提案されてDJプレミアに改名。同年にアルバム『ノー・モア・ミスター・ナイス・ガイ』でギャング・スターのメンバーとしてWild Pitchからデビュー[5]。

ギャング・スターで最初に制作した楽曲は「Words I Manifest」であり、当時ジャズのサンプリングに傾倒していたことから「ジャズ・サウンドにハードコアなビートを乗せたらどうなるか試してみよう」というテーマで制作する[4]。これが「ジャズ・ラップ」と呼ばれるようになるが、後にインタビューで「別にジャズ・ラップを追求しようとしていたわけじゃない」と話している[4]。

プロデューサーとして

1990年にLord Finesse & DJ Mike Smoothが発表したアルバム『Funky Technician』でのプロデュース・ワークによってプロデューサーとしての地位を築き、ニューヨーク・マンハッタンにあるスタジオ「D&D Studios」を拠点に制作を行うようになる[5]。

1994年にはナズの『イルマティック』、ノトーリアス・B.I.G.の『レディ・トゥ・ダイ』、ジェルー・ザ・ダマジャの『The Sun Rises in the East』を手掛け、さらにビッグ・ダディ・ケインやブランフォード・マルサリスのプロジェクトである「バックショット・ルフォンク」にも楽曲を提供した[5]。

2000年代はコモン、D.I.T.C.、ディアンジェロ、ジェイダキス、スヌープ・ドッグらとの共演作を発表[5]。2003年に「D&D Studios」を買収し、スタジオ名を「HeadQCourterz」に改名した[7]。ギャング・スターは同年に発表した6作目のアルバム『The Ownerz』を最後に活動休止状態に入る[5]。

2006年に発売されたクリスティーナ・アギレラのアルバム『バック・トゥ・ベーシックス』での共同制作で商業的に最大の成功を収め、先行シングルとして発売された「エイント・ノー・アザー・マン」はBillboard Hot 100で6位を記録した[5][8]。アギレラとの共演に対して周囲から懸念が寄せられていたことを明かし、以下のように語った[9]。

クリスティーナと仕事をすることになった時、周りからは「えっ、やめてくれよ」といった反応をされました。でも、実際に「エイント・ノー・アザー・マン」や「バック・イン・ザ・デイ」といった曲を聴き、アルバム全体が「DJプレミアらしい」作りになっていると分かると、みんな「いや、このアルバム最高だね。本当に感心したよ。最初は心配してたけど、まさに俺たちが愛する"プレミア"の音そのものじゃないか」と言ってくれました。実際に聴くまでは、何も言わないでほしいですね。私は単にヒップホップというジャンルだけに縛られたくはないんです。カントリー、ラップ、ソウル、ジャズ、ブルース、ゴスペルなど、どんな音楽であれ関わっていきたい。私という人間は、それらすべての要素から成り立っているんですから。

2008年にコンピレーション・アルバム『Beats That Collected Dust』を発表[5][10]。同作品は他のアーティストのために制作したもののお蔵入りとなった楽曲をまとめたものとなっている[10]。同年に発売されたゲーム『グランド・セフト・オートIV』に本人役として登場し、ラジオ局「The Classics 104.1」のホストを務めた。

グールーの死

2010年4月19日、ギャング・スターの相方であったグールーが骨髄腫により48歳で死去[11]。病状が末期に至る頃にグールー自身が書いたとされる手紙が公開され、手紙には以下のような内容が含まれてあった[12]。

私の『元DJ』には、私の名前、肖像、イベント、トリビュートなど、私の状況に関連するあらゆる事柄に一切関わってほしくありません。いかなる理由であれ、私の名前や状況が利用されることも望んでおらず、弁護士にはこれを徹底するよう指示しました。生前、7年以上にわたって彼とは一切関わりを持っていませんでしたし、死後も彼とは関わりたくありません。

上記の内容についてグールーの遺族はそれが偽物であると断言し、「2月に昏睡状態に陥って以来、2度と意識を取り戻すことはなかった」と明言した[13]。一連の騒動を受けて面会に訪れた際の心境を語り、「俺たちの絆は一生ものだし、今も変わらないんだっていうメッセージを伝えたんだ。それから彼の顔にキスをして、寂しくなるよと告げた。もう彼が逝ってしまったかのように見えたからね」などといったメッセージを公開した[14]。

2010年にレコードレーベル「Year Round Records」を設立し、所属アーティストを紹介するために制作したコンピレーション・アルバム『Get Used to Us』を発売[15]。2012年にラッパーのBumpy Knucklesとアルバム『Kolexxxion』を共作し、2014年にはロイス・ダ・ファイヴ・ナインとPRhymeを結成してセルフタイトルアルバムを発表[5]。2014年12月31日にスタジオ「HeadQCourterz」を閉鎖し、2015年1月よりニューヨーク市アストリアにあるレコーディング・スペースへ拠点を移す[16][17]。同年9月に発売されたビデオゲーム『NBA 2K16』のサウンドトラックの選曲担当をDJキャレド、DJマスタードと共に務めた[18]。2015年以降はドクター・ドレー、ミゲル、MCエイトとのスタジオ・セッションを通じて、アメリカ西海岸のアーティスト（ウエスト・コースト・ヒップホップ）との人脈も広げた[5]。

2016年にVH1で放送された1990年代のヒップホップ・シーンを描いたドラマ『The Breaks』では、エグゼクティブ・プロデューサーおよび音楽を務めた[5]。

2019年にギャング・スターのアルバムとして『One of the Best Yet』を発表[5]。同作品はグールーが2005年から2009年にかけて録音していた未発表のボーカル音源を使用し、ジェルー・ザ・ダマジャ、Group Home、Qティップ、J. コールがゲスト参加した[5]。

2020年から2021年にかけてバスタ・ライムスやパブリック・エナミーに加え、ブーム・バップ・スタイルの若手ラッパーであるウエストサイド・ガンやコンウェイ・ザ・マシーンの楽曲をプロデュース[5][19]。

Mass Appeal Recordsにおける展開

2022年にインディー・レーベル「Mass Appeal Records」が開始させたヒップホップの誕生50周年を記念する企画である「Hip-Hop 50」シリーズの第一弾として発売された5曲入りのEP『Hip-Hop 50, Vol. 1』をプロデュースした[5]。同作にはレミー・マー、ラプソディー、スリック・リック、リル・ウェイン、 そしてMass Appealの共同設立者であるナズが参加した[5]。また、毎週2時間にわたってホストを務めていたシリウス・サテライト・ラジオのチャンネル「Shade 45」の番組『Live From HeadQCourterz』が同年内に終了した[20]。

2023年にはブルックリンのラッパーであるテフロンのアルバム『2 Sides to Every Story』にジャジモトと共に共同プロデューサーとして参加し、ウエストサイド・ガン、Rome Streetzとのシングル「Runway」を発売[5][21]。また、『Beats That Collected Dust, Vol. 3』も発表した[5]。

2024年はアトランタのラッパーであるRussを客演に迎えた楽曲「Work This Out」、スヌープ・ドッグを客演に迎えた楽曲「Can U Dig That?」、リル・ウェイン、リック・ロス、ビッグ・ショーンを客演に迎えた楽曲「Ya Don't Stop」を発売[5]。

2025年にニューヨークのラッパーであるロック・マルシアーノ、Ransomとそれぞれタッグを組み、EP『The Coldest Profession』、『The Reinvention』を発売した[5]。また、デ・ラ・ソウルのアルバム『Cabin in the Sky』にプロデュース参加し、ナズとのフル・コラボレーション・アルバム『Light-Years』を発表。『Cabin in the Sky』と『Light-Years』は、同年の下半期に展開された「Mass Appeal Records」の「Legend Has It...」シリーズを締めくくる作品となった[5][22]。

2026年初頭にはジル・スコットの楽曲「Norf Side」（ティエラ・ワック参加）をプロデュースした[5]。

音楽性

「ブーム・バップ」スタイルの主要な先駆者の1人であり、ピート・ロック、ラージ・プロフェッサーらとともに「ゴールデンエイジ・ヒップホップ」と呼ばれる時代を築き上げた[23][24][25]。

制作スタイルはジャズ、ファンク、ソウルといったジャンルの楽曲のサンプリングに加え、プロデュースするアーティストの過去の作品をサンプリングすることでも知られている。ジェイ・Zの1999年のアルバム『Vol. 3... Life and Times of S. Carter』収録曲「So Ghetto」では、ジェイ・Zの1997年の楽曲「Who You Wit II」をサンプリングしている[26]。

また、ヒップホップの歌詞に関する膨大な知識を活かし、異なる複数の楽曲から歌詞のフレーズをスクラッチでつなぎ合わせて新たな一節を構築するという独自の手法を編み出し、多くの模倣者を生んできた[4][27]。

無調なサンプルを取り入れる試みも行っており、その一例としてジェルー・ザ・ダマジャの楽曲「Physical Stamina」では1960年代の電子音響音楽の音源をサンプリングし、細かく切り刻んで使用している。

『XXL』誌のインタビューで自身のサウンドの変遷について尋ねられた際、「マーリー・マールこそ俺にとって最大のインスピレーションの源だ」と回答し、その他にジャム・マスター・ジェイ、グランドマスター・フラッシュ、クール・ハーク、アフリカ・バンバータら[注 1]からの影響を挙げ、以下のように語った[28]。

彼らのプレイを目の当たりにしてきたからね。あれはブラックミュージックであり、ブラックカルチャーであり、ゲットーから生まれたものだ。黒人としてのアイデンティティの最も生々しい形であるゲットーの人々に、どうして共感せずにいられるだろうか？ 経済的に恵まれておらず、近隣の人々の生活環境が厳しい場所だとしても、そこには現実がある。俺たちはそこから生まれたんだ。だからこそ、同じような音楽を作ることで、彼らへの敬意を表しているのさ。

評価

ピッチフォークのTom Breihanは、2011年にDJプレミアについて以下のように評した[15]。

DJプレミアをラップ史上最高のプロデューサーと呼ぶことに異論を唱える者は少ないだろうが、彼が持つ偉大さの正体を定義するのは容易ではない。極めてニューヨークらしいビートメイクの様式を完成させ、確立した。それは、無限に繰り返されるループの中に生じる微細な「ほころび」によって強烈な力を放つ、歯切れの良いサウンドだった。プレミアが好んで用いたツールはシンプルだ。骨に響くようなスネア、完璧なタイミングでカットされるレコードの針音、そして他者のレコードから巧みに選び出された、正体不明だが印象的な断片。しかし彼は、真のアーティストが持つ優雅さと精密さをもって、これらすべてを融合させてみせた。また、偉大な映画監督のように、彼は引き際を心得ており、自身のトラック上でラッパーの声にスポットライトを譲ることもできた。昨年、ギャング・スターの長年のパートナーであるグールーが亡くなった際、多くの追悼の言葉が語られたが、その中でグールーのラッパーとしての最大の強みについては、あえて深く触れられないことが多かった。それは、彼の動じないモノトーンのラップが、プレミアの生み出す「錬金術」のようなビートに対して、最高の引き立て役になっていたという点だ。決してその逆ではなかったのである。
