「金髪のジェニー」（きんぱつのジェニー、英:Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair）はアメリカ合衆国の作曲家、スティーブン・フォスターが1854年に作詞・作曲した楽曲である。

原題の"Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair"は直訳すると「薄茶色の髪のジニー」となるが、日本ではフォスターの訳詞を多く手掛けている津川主一が訳題を「金髪のジェニー」として以降、林宏太郎や千葉比呂志の訳詞でもこれが踏襲されている。

解説

この歌の「ジェニー」はフォスターの妻であるジェーン・デニー・マクダウェル（Jane Denny McDowell, 1829年 - 1903年）が念頭にあったと言うのが定説になっている。ピッツバーグの開業医の娘であったジェーンは1850年にフォスターと結婚し、翌1851年に娘のマリオンが生まれる。しかし、ピッツバーグと音楽出版社のあるニューヨークを往復するフォスター家の生活は困窮を極めて1860年に破綻をきたし、1864年に亡くなるまで妻子との別居状態が続いた。「金髪のジェニー」が書かれた1854年頃には既にジェーンとの不仲が始まっていたとみられ、歌詞もそれを反映するかのように「別れた元恋人への郷愁」を歌うものになっている。

フォスターの生前には代表作の「故郷の人々（スワニー河）」や「ケンタッキーの我が家」、遺作となった「夢見る人」と比べて余り注目されなかった。ところが、1949年に米国作曲家作詞家出版者協会（ASCAP）と全米の放送局が著作権契約を巡って紛争状態となった際に、放送局が著作権の消滅したパブリックドメインの楽曲を優先的にラジオで放送する防衛策を取って「金髪のジェニー」が頻繁に流されたことから全米で広く知られるようになり、実にフォスターの没後85年を経て再評価されるに至った。
