年越し（としこし）は1年の最後の日、グレゴリオ暦で12月31日であり、多くの地域ではシルヴェスターの日と呼ぶ。多くの国で、年越しの夜の会合で多くの人が踊り、食べ、酒を飲んで、新年を迎える花火で祝う。年越しの礼拝に行く人たちもいる[1]。祝祭は通常、深夜0時を過ぎ1月1日（元日）まで続く。キリバスとサモアが最も早く新年を迎える国であり、ハワイ州ホノルルが最後の地域である[2]。
