放線菌 [Actinomycetes]
培地上や病巣部の細菌集落が放射状に広がることから放射状菌ともよばれた。細胞の形が分枝した糸状(菌糸)で多核の場合もあり、集落は一見かびに似ており、真菌と細菌の中間に位置するような微生物であるが、細胞の幅は約1μm(1mmの千分の1)で、その他の性質から細菌の1群とされ、放線菌目中の結核菌などが含まれるマイコバクテリア科を除く細菌を放線菌とよんでいる。広い分類ではノカルジアも放線菌に属している。S.A.ワクスマン(アメリカ)によって、抗生物質のストレプトマイシンが放線菌ストレプトマイセス･グリセウス(Streptomyces griseus)から発見されて以来、土壌中の一微生物群である放線菌が注目されるようになった。
気菌糸をつくるものやつくらないもの、胞子を包む胞子嚢をもつもの、根粒中で窒素を固定するものなど多種類があり、ストレプトマイセス属以外に約30属が知られている。抗生物質を産生する放線菌の多くがストレプトマイセス属の放線菌である。家畜に放線菌症をおこすアクチノマイセスもある。放線菌の多くは土壌に生息し、一般にグラム陽性で、好気性または通性嫌気性である。放線菌に寄生するウイルスも知られ、アクチノファージ(actinophage)とよばれている。アクチノ･ファージは六角形の頭部に細長い尾部をもっている。アクチノ･ファージは近年、遺伝子の組替え技術でクローニングの媒介(ベクター)の一つとして研究されるようになった。
