チャールズ・バベッジとは、英国の数学者・計算機科学者である。1791年12月26日生まれ。「バベッジの階差機関」と呼ばれる、歯車式の多項式計算機を開発・研究したことで知られている。1871年10月18日没。
バベッジは、ケンブリッジ大学トリニティカレッジ在学中に解析数学学会を設立し、ライプニッツ流の微積分学をイギリスに定着させる活動を行っている。後に本格的なプログラミングを可能とする解析機関を設計したが、製作コストなどの問題によって開発は実現しなかった。
1991年、ロンドン科学博物館は、残されていたバベッジの設計図をもとに、バベッジのコンピュータが復元された。いくつかの設計図上の間違いは見つかったものの、バベッジのコンピュータは正しく計算を行うことが実証された。現在ではコンピュータを発想して設計を行った最初の人物であるという評価がなされている。そしてチャールズ・バベッジはコンピュータの父と呼ばれるようになった。
ちなみに、バベッジは社交界で詩人バイロンの娘エイダと知り合いになった。彼女は科学好きで数学の素養もあり、バベッジの解析機関を理解することができたといわれる。米国国防総省のプログラミング言語「Ada」は彼女の名前に由来するものである。

チャールズ・バベッジ（Charles Babbage、FRS、1791年12月26日 - 1871年10月18日[1]）は、イギリスの数学者。哲学者、計算機科学者でもあり、世界で初めて「プログラム可能」な計算機を考案した[2]。検眼鏡の発明者。
