晩年
市長退任後の1946年、国際連合連合国救済復興機関(UNRRA)の事務局長に就任したほか、音楽同好会であるファイ・ミュー・アルファ・シンフォニアの会員となった。1947年9月20日、膵臓癌のためニューヨークブロンクス区の自宅で死去。64歳。葬儀は同区のウッドローン墓地で執り行われた[30]。
没後
歴史学者の間ではニューヨークはもとよりアメリカ史上最も偉大な市長と認識されることが多いものの、ルドルフ・ジュリアーニと互角とする専門家も少なからず存在する[31]。
エピソード
- 身長が低く、5フィート(約152.4㎝)程度とされることが多いものの、ニューヨーク・タイムズの記事によると実際の身長は5フィート2インチ(約157.5㎝)であったという[32]。ファーストネームのフィオレロ(Fiorello)も、イタリア語で「小さな花」を意味する。
- 出自や青年期の渡航経験が影響してか、ヘブライ語、クロアチア語、ドイツ語、ハンガリー語、イタリア語、そしてイディッシュ語の7ヶ国語の話者と伝えられている。
- ラガーディア空港は、隣接するニュージャージー州のニューアーク空港にTWAの路線が就航したのに対抗して、建設が進められたという逸話がある。なお、現在ニューヨーク市内で操業中の3つの主要空港のうち最も規模が小さい。
- 音楽好きが高じてプロ、アマ問わずオーケストラを主宰していたことで有名。また、「市長として行った最も有望な業績は?」との問いに、1936年の音楽・芸術系高校設立を挙げた[33]。
- ラガーディアの名を冠した通りがイスラエルのテルアビブやクロアチアのリエカにある。
- 1939年頃、ピンボールをギャンブルとして禁ずる法律が議会で可決されたが、その際ラガーディア自身がこれを大槌で叩き壊している写真が多数存在する。なお、同法は1976年をもって廃止となった。
- 映画ゴーストバスターズ2にて、ニューヨーク市長のレニーが側近の1人に「夕べは寝室で1時間ばかりフィオレロ・ラガーディアと話をしててね。彼は40年も前にこの世を去ったんだけど」と話すシーンが出てくる。
