「description」の意味

記述, 説明, 描写

「description」は記述や説明、言葉による描写のことである。「Please provide a detailed description of the incident.（事件についての詳しい説明をしてください。）」また、種類や銘柄のことを指す場合もある。「I ate and compared sweets of every description.（ありとあらゆるお菓子を食べ比べてみました。）」そのほか、警察が逃走中の容疑者などを捜索するために作成する人相書も「description」という。「The man's face on the security camera answered to a description.（防犯カメラに映っていた男の顔は人相書と一致しました。）」

コンピューター用語ではWebページの紹介文となる記事の要約や概要を記したテキストを「description」や「meta description」という。検索順位には直接影響しないものの、クリック率やトラフィックの向上に関わるため、どのような「description」を設定するかはSEOにおいて重要な問題である。「description」の文字数に制限はないが、デバイスによって表示される文字数には制限がある。「The description displayed on smartphone screen is 71 characters.（スマートホンの画面に表示されるディスクリプションは71文字です。）

「description」の発音記号は「diskrípʃən」である。カタカナ読みだと「ディスクリィプシャン」になる。

「description」の語源は古期フランス語で記述を意味する「description」である。「de」は下へ、「script」は書く、「tion」はことやものを意味している。

「description」の使い方・例文

「description」を用いた名言として広く知られているのは、イギリス経験論の父と呼ばれる17世紀の哲学者ジョン・ロックによる次の言葉である。「A sound mind in a sound body, is a short but full description of a happy state in this world.（健全な肉体に宿る健全な精神は、端的であるものの十分に、この世界の幸福な状態というものを説明しているものです。）」

また、「職業としての学問」や「プロテスタンティズムの倫理と資本主義の精神」などの著書で知られるドイツの社会学者マックス・ヴェーバーによる次の言葉も有名である。「Every type of purely direct concrete description bears the mark of artistic portrayal.（すべての種類の純粋かつ直接的、具体的な記述は、芸術的描写の形跡をあわせ持っています。）」
