ステレオ (stereo) は、音響工学ではステレオフォニック (stereophonic) の略語であり、左右2つのスピーカで音声を再生する方式のことである。広義には、ステレオフォニック再生のための音声信号を集音、録音、伝送、通信、放送、加工する技術全般、またはステレオフォニック再生のための音響再生装置（ステレオセット）を指す。

- ^ デューク・エリントンと彼のオーケストラも偶然から1932年2月3日にステレオ録音を行った（RCAビクターによる録音）。当時、マイクを複数設置して同時に録音するやり方が普通に行われていた。これは後でそれぞれを聞き比べて最もよいマイク位置を選択するためである。また、マスター盤に何かあった場合のスペアの意味もあった。あるコレクターが同時に録音されたものを複数入手し、それらを同時に再生するとステレオになることに気づいた。これが後に22枚組CD "The Duke Ellington Centennial Edition" に入れられ、販売されている。同様の例は1933年4月11日にエドワード・エルガーが自身の指揮でBBC交響楽団と共にアビー・ロード・スタジオで録音した「コケイン」（後半の5分が現存）などでも見られ、エルガーの「ステレオ」録音はオリジナルの録音と共にナクソスから発売されている（1933年、「偶然の」ステレオ）
