アロエ・ベラ
●地中海沿岸や西インド諸島のバルバドス島が原産です。高さは８０～１００センチ、葉は狭披針形で、ロゼット状に叢生します。葉縁には鋭い棘状の鋸歯があります。薬用アロエとして有名で、古くから「医者いらず」とも言われてきました。また透明な葉肉は苦みがないため、生食用にも利用されています。別名で「バルバドスアロエ」とも呼ばれます。
●ユリ科アロエ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Aloe vera。英名は Aloe vera, Barbados aloe。

アロエベラ (Aloe vera) は、アラビア半島南部、北アフリカ、カナリア諸島、カーボベルデが原産地だと考えられている多肉植物である。乾燥地帯でも育ち、アフリカ、インドやその他の地域に広く分布している。生薬としてもしばしば用いられる。アロエベラの薬効については多くの研究が行われている。その中には相反もあるが[1][2][3][4]、アロエベラの抽出物は怪我や火傷、皮膚感染、皮脂嚢胞、糖尿病、高脂血症等に効くという証拠も多い[3]。これらの薬効は、多糖、マンナン、アントラキノン、レクチン等の存在に依ると考えられている[3][5][6]。
