アメリカ合衆国における元帥（げんすい）は、アメリカ軍において軍人に与えられる最高位の階級である。

- ^ 元帥の階級が制定された第二次世界大戦当時、陸海軍の少将は完全に同等な階級ではなかった。陸海軍とも少将は「二つ星」だったが、陸軍には「一つ星」の准将（brigadier general）があったのに対し、海軍に「一つ星」の階級は存在せず、大佐から将官に昇進するとき、陸軍ではまず「一つ星」になるのに対して、海軍ではいきなり「二つ星」となり、陸軍の「一つ星」古参准将より先任になった。海軍では「二つ星」の少将を上級（upper half）と下級（lower half）に分け、先任順位と俸給を区別していた。なお、陸軍と違って海軍では一度少将に昇進させると恒久的な階級となり、戦争が終わっても大佐に戻すことが議会から認められていなかったので、第二次世界大戦中は少将の数を抑制するため、キング合衆国艦隊司令長官兼海軍作戦部長は、戦後に大佐に戻すことが可能な恒久的でない肩書きとして、かつて大佐が一時的に任命されていた代将（commodore）を「一つ星」の肩書きとして1943年4月に復活させ、戦後は再び廃止した（後に海軍作戦部長となったアーレイ・バークもその一人）。したがって、この法律にある"rear admiral of the upper half"は、現在のアメリカ海軍の"rear admiral (upper half)"とは別物である。Buell, Master of Seapower, pp. 324-326.
