1900年代初頭から独自の会社法と裁判制度により、法人の設立に最適な州として知られ[1]、アメリカ上場企業の50%、フォーチュン500企業の64%、会社数で100万社に及ぶ企業が設立準拠地ないし本社を置く[2][3]。州内は北からニューキャッスル郡、ケント郡、サセックス郡に分割されており、3という郡の数は50州の中で最も少ない。南2郡は昔から農業が盛んであり、デュポンのお膝元でもあるニューキャッスル郡は工業化が進んでいる。
