カラアザール病

寄生虫（原虫）リーシュマニア・ドノバニによって引き起こされる熱帯病。サシチョウバエと呼ばれる吸血性のチョウバエを媒介とする感染症である。
カラアザール病は、感染後数ヶ月程度の潜伏期間を経て、高熱とともに発症する。肝臓や脾臓が肥大し、皮膚が黒変して腫れ物を生じる。致死率は非常に高く、治療を施さない場合の致死率はほぼ100%。ただし、適切な処置が施されれば90%以上の確率で治療可能とされる。
カラアザール病は北アフリカや中近東などで流行している。特にスーダン南部では過去数年間にわたり猛威を振るっており、深刻な危機に見舞われている。
