「diffraction」は物理学の専門用語で、光や音、その他の波が障害物や開口部に遭遇した際に生じる現象を指す。直進する波が障害物や開口部によって曲がり、その結果として波の進行方向が変わることである。例えば、光が細いスリットを通過するときに、スリットの両側で光が広がる現象がこれに該当する。

回折とは、光が障害物の裏側に回り込んで、直進する性質をも持つ光には本来到達不可能であるはずの領域に、光が到達する現象のことである。

回折現象は、光の波長の先端から新しい方向に向かう小規模な波長が繰り返し発生することによって生じる。この回折の現象は、ホイヘンスの定理などによって説明することができる。

なお、微細な凹凸によって回折現象を引き起こすための素子は、特に回折格子と呼ばれる。

光線が障害物の縁付近を通過する時に、幾何学的な影の部分に回り込んで分散する現象。回折が起こると、回折模様と呼ばれる明るい部分と暗い部分からなるパターンができる。
