人工知能(AI)の代表的なシステムで、専門家のもつ知識やノウハウをコンピューターに蓄え、専門家以外でもそれらを利用して、専門家に近い問題解決を可能にするシステムのこと。知識ベース、推論機構、ユーザーインターフェース(入出力装置)から構成されている。自動車分野では故障診断などへ応用されている。

専門家システムとも呼ばれ, 人間の専門家がその専門知識を利用して多くの知的処理を行うのと同様に, 専門的な知識を貯蓄しておき, その知識を利用して知的な処理を行うコンピュータシステムのこと. エキスパートシステムは, データベース, 知識ベース, 推論機構, 知識獲得・修正機構, 説明機構などから構成される. その実現化にあたっては, 人間の専門家がもつ言語化しにくい知識をいかにしてコンピュータ内に表現するかが重要な課題となる.

エキスパートシステム（英語: expert system）とは、人工知能研究から生まれたコンピュータシステムで、人間の専門家（エキスパート）の意思決定能力をエミュレートするものである[1]。専門家のように知識についての推論によって複雑な問題を解くよう設計されており、通常のプログラミングのようにソフトウェア開発者が設定した手続きに従うわけではない[2][3][4]。1970年代に人工知能の研究者によって開発され、1980年代にわたって商業的に適用され[5]、AIソフトウェアとして最初に成功を収めた形態である[6][7][8][9][10][11]。日本語訳では専門家システムと言う場合もある。
