『ニール・ヤング・アーカイヴス Vol.1: 1963-1972』(Neil Young Archives Vol. 1: 1963–1972)は、カナダ系アメリカ人ミュージシャン、ニール・ヤングのアーカイヴ音源を集めたボックス・セット・シリーズの第一弾。
2009年6月2日に発売され、ハイレゾリューション・オーディオと付属のビジュアル・ドキュメントを収録したブルーレイディスク10枚組、DVD10枚組、ベーシックなCD8枚組の3種類のフォーマットでリリースされた。
ヤングのスクワイアーズとバッファロー・スプリングフィールドでの初期をカバーし、アルバム『ニール・ヤング』、『ニール・ヤング・ウィズ・クレイジー・ホース』、『アフター・ザ・ゴールド・ラッシュ』、『ハーヴェスト』からの曲の様々なデモ、アウトテイク、別バージョンや、この時期にクレイジー・ホースやクロスビー、スティルス、ナッシュ&ヤングとレコーディングした曲も収録されている。また、いくつかのライヴ・ディスクと、ヤングが1970年代初頭に監督した長らく絶版となっていた映画『ジャーニー・スルー・ザ・パスト』のコピー(ブルーレイ/DVD版)も収録されている。
2010年1月31日、このボックス・セットはグラミー賞の最優秀ボックス入りまたは特別限定版パッケージを受賞し、ニール・ヤングと彼のアート・ディレクターであるゲイリー・バーデン、ジェニス・ヘオが受賞を分かち合った[12]。その後、『Neil Young Archives Volume II: 1972-1976』は2020年11月まで続かず、1972年から1976年までの作品をカバーし、10枚組CDボックスセットとしてのみリリースされた。続いて2024年には『Neil Young Archives Volume III: 1976-1987』がリリースされ、7月25日に予約受付、9月6日に正式リリースが発表された。1976年から1987年までの彼の作品を網羅したこのセットは、17枚のCDと5枚のブルーレイで構成され、後者には11本のフィルムが収録される。予約注文には『テイクス』と題されたCDが含まれ、17枚のCDのうち16枚から1曲ずつ収録される[13]。
背景
これは、ニール・ヤングの全キャリアを年代順に収録するニール・ヤング・アーカイヴ・シリーズの最初のボックス・セットである。グラミー賞の最優秀ボックス・セットまたは特別限定版パッケージ賞を受賞した[14][15]このボックスには、ヤングのキャリアの最初の10年間、ウィニペグでのスクワイアーズ時代、バッファロー・スプリングフィールド、クレイジー・ホース、クロスビー、スティルス、ナッシュ&ヤング、そして最初の数枚のソロ・アルバムにまたがる、既発音源と貴重な未発表音源が収録されている。
何年にもわたって矛盾する発言が続いたが、最終的に、このセットは3つのフォーマットでリリースされることが明らかになった: CD、DVD、ブルーレイである。DVD版とBlu-ray版には10枚のディスク(DVDとBlu-rayで初公開された「ジャーニー・スルー・ザ・パスト」を含む)と236ページのフルカラーハードブックが特別パッケージに収められており、Blu-ray版の購入者には永続的に無料オンラインアップデートが提供される(ただし、最後のアップデートは2010年4月に投稿され、最終的に2016年初めにすべてのBDライブアップデートは完全に終了した)。CDセットには8枚のCD(ディスク00と01は1枚に収まっており、ディスク09は含まれていない)とCDサイズのブックレットがある。アーカイブスの各ディスクは、発売時にワーナー・ブラザースを通じて独占的に個別に入手することもできた。ワーナー・ブラザースによるCD、DVD、Blu-rayボックスセットの予約注文には、ディスク00の「Aurora」と「Mustang」を収録した7インチ45回転シングルも含まれていた[16]。さらに、DVDとBlu-rayのBOXを予約した人には、5月上旬にディスク00(Blu-rayのみ)のボーナス・コピーが贈られ、内容を 「試聴」することができた[17]。すべてのDVDとブルーレイのボックスセットには、ボックスセット内の全楽曲のMP3をダウンロードできるコードが書かれたカードも同梱されていた[16]。
全137曲中、47曲が未発表曲。その中にはライヴ・ヴァージョンや既発曲のオルタネイト・ミックスも含まれている。このセットに収録されている13曲は、いかなる形でも未発表だった。10枚組セットには、8枚組CDには収録されていない「隠しトラック」がいくつか含まれている。
Blu-ray版のオーディオ・フォーマットは、DTSサラウンドまたは24ビット/96kHz PCMステレオ・トラックを選択可能な『ジャーニー・スルー・ザ・パスト』を除くすべてのディスクで、24ビット/192kHzステレオPCMで収録されている。DVD版には24ビット/96kHzステレオPCMトラックが収録されているが、CDは標準の16ビット/44.1kHzフォーマットである[18]。
