ピッツバーグという地名は、フレンチ・インディアン戦争の際にこの地に建てられていたフランス軍のデュケイン砦に進攻し、フランス軍を撤退に追い込んだイギリス軍のジョン・フォーブズ将軍がウィリアム・ピット（大ピット）にちなんで1758年につけたものであった[注釈 1][3]。アメリカ独立戦争中、フィラデルフィアよりも西へ届いた合法の郵便路線はこのピッツバーグを通るものだけであった[4]。1794年に正式な町となり、1816年に市制を施行した[5]。市旗・市章は市の発足までにペンシルベニア・ダッチが流入し影響力をもったことを示唆している。
地元のNFLチーム「スティーラーズ」の名にも見られるように、かつては鉄鋼生産の中心地として栄えた。1970年代にオイルショック、1980年代中盤に安価な輸入鉄鋼が、それぞれ地域の鉄鋼業を衰退させた。メロン財閥とロックフェラー家は鉄鋼業に見切りをつけ、地域のハイテク産業・保険・教育・金融に投資をした。その経験は2007年に始まったサブプライムローン問題や世界金融危機でも生きた。全米のみならず全世界を巻き込んだこの経済危機の最中にあっても、ピッツバーグの住宅市場は比較的安定し、2008年に入ってもピッツバーグにおける求人は増加していた[6]。こうした再生の成功は、バラク・オバマが2009年9月に開催された第3回20か国・地域首脳会合の開催地としてピッツバーグを選んだ要素となった[7][8]。
ピッツバーグは学術都市でもある。カーネギーメロン大学・デュケイン大学・ピッツバーグ大学など、多数の大学が市内および都市圏内にキャンパスを置く。カーネギーメロン大学とピッツバーグ大学がキャンパスを置いているオークランド地区は、高等教育・研究機関や文化施設が特に集中している。
