車外から新気を導入し、車外に排出する換気装置。自然換気と強制換気方法があるが、いずれの場合も新気の導入は車体の静圧が高い部分(フロントカウルなど)からで、また排出は車体の静圧が低い部分(リヤピラーなど)からが一般的である。とくに自然換気での換気量は静圧だけによっているので、導入、排出の静圧差が大きくなるよう位置選定が重要である。外気導入部では雨が入らないように空気と雨を分離する構造をとり、排出部 (ベンチレーションアウトレット)では雨水、排気ガスなどが室内へ逆流しないような構造をとる。

ベンチレーター（英語: ventilator）とは、閉鎖された空間と外部との換気を促すための装置の総称。一般には室内の換気を目的とするものが多いが、ゴーグルやヘルメット内部の換気を促すためにつけられている穴を指すこともある。人工呼吸器（mechanical ventilator）に関しては当該項目を参照のこと。

人工呼吸器（じんこうこきゅうき、英: ventilator）とは、病的理由により、呼吸ができない、または呼吸が不十分な患者の呼吸を助けるために、呼吸ガスを肺に出し入れして機械換気（英: mechanical ventilation）ないしは人工呼吸（英: artificial ventilation）を行う医療機器の一種である。人工呼吸器は、コンピューター制御のマイクロプロセッサーを搭載した機械であるが、手で操作するシンプルなバッグバルブマスクでも患者を換気することができる（用手換気という）。人工呼吸器は、主に集中治療、在宅医療、救急医療ではスタンドアローン型が、麻酔科では麻酔器の構成機器として使用されている。
