《原題、(イタリア)I Puritani》ベリーニのイタリア語によるオペラ。全3幕。1835年初演。ピューリタン革命時の英国を舞台に、ピューリタンの貴族の娘と王党派の騎士と恋敵の3人をめぐる物語。第2幕の「狂乱の場」とよばれる場面が有名。

せいきょうと【清教徒】

（Puritans英）一六世紀後半、エリザべス朝時代に、イングランド国教会に残っていたカトリック的要素を不服として、カルヴァン主義の立場から信仰と生活の清純を保とうとした人びと。長老派・独立組合教会派・バプテスト派などを含む。その一部は一七世紀前半にニューイングランド植民地に移住。一七世紀中頃、イギリスの清教徒が中心となって行った市民革命を清教徒革命という。スチュアート家のチャールズ一世の専制政治に議会が抵抗して一六四二年に内乱が勃発し、クロンウェルらの率いる清教徒を中心とする議会軍が王軍に勝ち、四九年王を処刑して共和制を樹立。のちクロンウェルが護国卿となり、軍事独裁を行ったが、その死後、六〇年王政に復帰。ピューリタン革命。

ピューリタン（英語: Puritan）または、その日本語訳として清教徒（せいきょうと）は16世紀から17世紀にかけてイングランド王国で活動した改革派プロテスタントの総称。ローマ・カトリックの影響を取り除こうとしたエリザベス1世の宗教改革が不十分だとして、国教会のさらなる改革を訴える形で登場し、時に大きな社会運動を伴ったために、イギリスと初期アメリカの歴史（特に護国卿時代）に大きな影響を与えた。彼らの思想や行動原理はピューリタニズム（英語: Puritanism、清教主義）と呼ばれる。名称は清潔、潔白などを表す「Purity」に由来し、転じて頑固者や潔癖者を意味するなど、本来は蔑称であった。

^ 似た用語に「国教忌避者」（Recusant）があるが、こちらはカトリック教徒であり、プロテスタントである非国教徒（Nonconformists）とは異なる。
^ カトリックにおいては一般信徒が聖書を読むことはまずありえなかった。神父はローマ・カトリックの教義に基づいた聖書の内容を話す存在だった。一方で牧師は、一般信徒が自分たちで聖書を読む前提で、その読み方を解説する存在だった。その方法として教理問答などが利用された。
^ 小会は最小単位の組織であり、主は長老会（presbyteries）とも呼ばれる中会が基幹となる。大会は地域の会議（synods）であり、総会は全国規模のものとなる。
