1996年、ミシシッピ州クラークスデールは、肥満、糖尿病、高血圧、心臓病を抱える住民の割合が全米中著しく高いという報告を受け、小学校からコーラやスナック菓子の自動販売機が撤去された[3]。クラークスデールは奴隷貿易時代には砂糖のプランテーションがあり、黒人奴隷が砂糖生産に多数従事していた歴史がある[3]。
