1996年、ミシシッピ州クラークスデールは、肥満糖尿病高血圧心臓病を抱える住民の割合が全米中著しく高いという報告を受け、小学校からコーラやスナック菓子の自動販売機が撤去された[3]。クラークスデールは奴隷貿易時代には砂糖のプランテーションがあり、黒人奴隷が砂糖生産に多数従事していた歴史がある[3]
