ジョン・クリストファー（John Christopher）ことサミュエル・ヨウド（Samuel Youd、1922年4月16日 - 2012年2月3日）は、イギリスのSF作家である。「ジョン・クリストファー」以外の別名としては、スタンリー・ウィンチェスター（Stanly Winchester）、ヒラリー・フォード（Hilary Ford）、ウィリアム・ゴドフリー（William Godfrey）、ペーター・グラーフ（Peter Graaf）、ピーター・ニコルズ（Peter Nichols）、アンソニー・ライ（Anthony Rye）がある。

代表作はジョン・クリストファー名義でのトリポッド・シリーズ。

経歴

クリストファーはランカシャーのハイトン（現在はマージーサイド州）で生まれ、ハンプシャー地方ウィンチェスターのPeter Symonds' School（現Peter Symonds College）で教育を受けた。

第二次世界大戦では1941年から1946年までの間、イギリス陸軍信号部隊（Royal Corps of Signals）で軍務に付いた。ロックフェラー財団から奨学金を受けることにより、文筆業に従事することが可能となった。最初の作品は"The Winter Swan"である。彼の小説は1950・60年代に人気を博した。その代表例が破滅ものの『草の死』（The Death of Grass）である。近年では彼の小説は多くが絶版で手に入りづらくなっているが、SF分野の収集家や愛好家にとってはいまだに人気が衰えていない。1980年代には『三本足シリーズ』がイギリスでTVドラマ化され、再び脚光を浴びた。

クリストファーのSF小説の多くは、ジョン・ウィンダムやH・G・ウェルズの伝統を引き継いだ終末ものである。これらの作品においては、社会もしくは世界を揺るがす大災害という状況に置かれた平凡な登場人物たちの姿が描かれる。クリストファーは、登場人物と社会がそのような変化にどう対応していくかを探求しているのである。

1966年以降、クリストファーはジュヴナイルSFを書き始めた。トリポッド・シリーズ、"Sword of the Spirits" 3部作、そして『異世界からの生還』（The Lotus Caves）は今日でも広く読まれている。

2012年2月3日、永眠。89歳没。
