読み方：たなご

２コイ目コイ科タナゴ亜科の淡水魚の総称。産卵管を二枚貝の排水管に挿入し、内部のえらに卵を産みつけ、稚魚は孵化(ふか)後しばらく貝の中で成長したのちに外へ出る。産卵期の雄には美しい婚姻色を示すものが多い。アジア・ヨーロッパの温帯に広く分布し、日本にはタナゴ・ヤリタナゴ・ゼニタナゴ・バラタナゴなど15種が知られ、イタセンパラ・ミヤコタナゴは天然記念物。
