R136はタランチュラ星雲の中心付近にある散開星団である[2]。約100万歳から200万歳と若い星団で[2]、巨星と超巨星から構成されている。その多くはスペクトル型がO3で[2]、39個のO3星が確認されている[2][3]。さらに、ウォルフ・ライエ星もいくつか確認されている[3][4]。
