テレコミュニケーションとは、信号の送受信によって通信を行うことでである。
「テレコミュニケーション」という言葉は、ギリシア語で「離れた・遠い」を意味する「tele」を接頭辞としており、「遠隔地と情報交換する」といった意味合いを持つ。ちなみに「テレビジョン」（television）も同様に「tele」を接頭辞とする言葉である。テレコミュニケーションの省略形として「テレコム」（英語では「telecom」、ドイツ語などでは「Telekom」）の表記が使用されることも多い。
テレコミュニケーションという表現は、通信手段を限定するものではないため、一般的には、有線通信も無線通信も含み、また、電気信号も光信号も含む。日本語に翻訳する場合、文脈に応じて「電気通信」や「遠距離通信」「情報通信」などの語が充てられることもある。

電気通信（でんきつうしん）とは、モールス信号をはじめ、電気的に映像、音声、文字などの信号を伝える通信である。
電気通信事業法は、「有線、無線その他の電磁的方式により、符号、音響又は映像を送り、伝え又は受けること」と定義している。
また、放送は公衆に向けた通信の送信とされ、電気通信の部分集合であるが、しばしば並立するものとして言及される。
有線通信・無線通信という区分があるが、現在の通信ネットワークは有線・無線を適材適所に組み合わせて構築される。
英語ではテレコミュニケーション (telecommunication) と呼ぶが、この場合は電気に限らず、通信の目的で遠隔地に信号を伝送すること全般を指す。かつては、狼煙、トーキングドラム、腕木通信、手旗信号、回光通信機などが使われた。現代においては電気通信が主流であり、電話機、テレビ、ラジオ、コンピュータといった機器を使用する。電気通信分野の初期の発明者としては、アレクサンダー・グラハム・ベル、グリエルモ・マルコーニ、ジョン・ロジー・ベアードらが挙げられる。電気通信は世界経済の重要な部分となっており、2006年の全世界の電気通信業界の収入は1兆2千億ドルと見積もられている。
