コモディティ（commodity）とは、経済学において、完全または実質的な代替可能性を持つ経済的価値またはサービスである。誰がそれらを生産したのかに関係なく、市場はその商品価値を同等かほぼ同じとして扱う[1]。鉄鉱石、砂糖、米や小麦といった穀物など、大半のコモディティは原材料、根幹資源、農作物、鉱業生産品であるが、中には化学品やコンピュータメモリなど大量生産された製品もある。

簡単な例：トマトは（北半球では）7月に安く、1月に高くなることを知っていても、1月の高値を利用する前に腐ってしまうため、7月に購入して1月に受け取ることはできない。7月の価格は、7月のトマトの需給を反映したものになる。1月の先渡価格は、1月の需給に対する市場の期待（予測）を反映したものになる。「7月のトマト」は、事実上、「1月のトマト」とは異なる商品である（コンタンゴ（英語版）とバックワーディション（英語版）の対比）。
