「ノーウォーク」という名前は当初 "Norwaukee" という綴りであり、その由来は不明である。アルゴンキン語の「土地の地点」を意味する noyank から派生した可能性がある。インディアンの酋長の名前と考えられる "Naramauke" から変化した可能性もある^[2]。

昔から牡蠣の養殖がノーウォークの重要な産業であり、「オイスター・タウン」という綽名もあった。毎年9月に牡蠣祭を開催している。
