by the time

「by the time」とは、「これをする時までに」「こうなる頃に」など特定の時点より前に状況が進行していたことの説明として使用できる英語表現である。
「when（～するときに）」に似た表現であるが、時制の一致に気を付けないといけないのが、「by the time」の特徴である。後ろに独立した文章を伴う「by the time S V」という副詞節では、主文を副文より前から続いている時制で表現するようにする。「By the time it is finished, the picture will have been painted for over 3 months.（絵が完成するまでは3か月以上描かれ続けるだろう）」
「until」は次のような使い方がある。「We became accidental dog keepers until he gets a place of his own.（彼が自分の家を持つまで、私たちは偶然にも犬の飼育係になった）」「The state could extend restrictions on exports for six months until November.（州は輸出の制限を11月まで6ヶ月間延長する可能性がある）」

「by the time S+V」とは、「SがVする頃には」という意味の英語構文である。「by the time」から始まる副詞節の動詞が現在形の場合は主文の動詞が未来完了形になる。また副詞節の動詞が過去形の場合は、主文の動詞が過去完了形になる。「The restaurant will have been closed, by the time she finishes work.（彼女の仕事が終わる頃には、レストランは閉まっているだろう）」「By the time I arrived, the concert had been already over.（到着する頃には、すでにコンサートは終わっていた）」
