グリーンやフェアウェーなど (土壌) の硬さを表すために使われる尺度で 硬くなるほど数値が大きくなり、日本のプロのトーナメントのグリーンでは 12-14 前後に設定されることが多い。コンパクションが 14以上のグリーンになると ピッチマークがほとんど付かない。一般的には、11-12 程度のグリーンが多いようだが、10以下のグリーンは、大きなピッチマークが出来る 軟らかめなグリーンということになる。コンパクションは、コンパクションメーターという、鉄針をグリーンに差してその時の付加を (バネ仕掛けで) 測定して表示する機器で計測する。
