プレプリントは査読を通過する前の論文[1]のことであり、査読前論文（さどくまえろんぶん）とも呼ばれる。プレプリントを記録・公開するリポジトリをプレプリントリポジトリといい、これをホストするサーバーはプレプリントサーバーという[2][3]。研究機関によるプレプリントリポジトリは、機関リポジトリと呼ばれることもある。なお、本記事では「プレプリントリポジトリ」と「プレプリントサーバー」を厳密に区別しない。
