概要

当時のカリフォルニア州知事で、大陸横断鉄道の一つセントラルパシフィック鉄道の創立者でもあるリーランド・スタンフォードと夫人のジェーン（英語版）が、腸チフスの病で早逝した彼の一人息子であるリーランド・スタンフォード・ジュニアの名を残すために、1886年に構想。当時のハーバード大学学長のチャールズ・ウィリアム・エリオットに相談するなど、6年間にわたる準備の末、1891年にカリフォルニア州によって設立された。スタンフォード夫妻の存命時（リーランド自身は1893年 6月21日、夫人は1905年 2月28日に死去）は学費が無料だったが、1920年に有料化されている。

各種世界大学ランキングで常に最上位に位置する教育機関であり、最も古く権威のある英国世界大学評価機関QS世界大学ランキング2021では世界第2位^[9]（同ランキング東京大学24位、京都大学38位^[10]）、2021年THE世界大学ランキングで世界第2位^[11]、米国トムソン・ロイター世界大学ランキング2019では、世界第1位に評価されている^[12]。オックスフォード大学、ケンブリッジ大学、ハーバード大学、カリフォルニア工科大学（Caltech)、マサチューセッツ工科大学（MIT）と共に、全世界屈指の英語圏エリート名門校の1つ。

スタンフィード大学の校訓は「Die Luft der Freiheit weht（独: 自由の風が吹く）」。

サンフランシスコから約60km南東に位置し、地理上も、歴史的にもApple、Google、Facebook、AdobeなどIT企業の一大拠点であるシリコンバレーの中心に位置している。

スタンフォード大学は特に起業家精神に優れた大学として知られていて、スタートアップ企業への資金提供において世界で最も成功している大学の1つである^[13]^[14]^[15]^[16]。卒業生はこれまで多数の企業を設立し、これらを合わせた年間収益は2.7兆ドル（約290兆円）を超え、世界第7位の経済規模（2020年時点）に匹敵している^[17]^[18]^[19]。

2020年10月現在、84人のノーベル賞受賞者、28人のチューリング賞受賞者、8人のフィールズ賞受賞者^[20]、1人のアメリカ合衆国大統領（ハーバート・フーバー）、74人の存命の億万長者、17人の宇宙飛行士を輩出している^[21]。超富裕層（UHNW、Ultra High-Net-Worthの略）に関するリサーチや評価を行うWealth-Xが資産が3000万ドルを超える超富裕層がどの大学に通っていたかを分析した結果（Wealth-Xは学部と大学院両方の学位所有者を卒業生としてカウント。修了証書取得者・名誉学位受賞者・中退者などは集計から除いた）、2017年に発表した時点で、スタンフォード大学出身者は全米五位の466人いると報じられた^[22]。
