2020年国勢調査時点でのアーカンソー州の人口は3,011,524人で、2010年より95,606人、すなわち3.28%増加した^[33]。

アーカンソー州の人口は1820年で15,000人に満たなかったが、1835年の特別国政調査時に52,240人にまで増加し、州昇格に必要とされた4万人を遙かに超えていた^[34]。1836年に州昇格を果たした後、1870年まで人口は倍増を続けた。その後も成長を続けたが1950年と1960年には幾らかの減少を記録した。これには幾つかの原因があった。農業の機械化によって農業労働者の需要が減ったこと、教育を受けた若者が農業以外の仕事を求めて州を離れたことなどだった^[35]。その後は成長を再開し、1980年には200万人を超えた^[36]。現在の成長率、年齢別構成、男女比率は全国平均と同じ水準にある。少数民族比率もほぼ全国平均並みだが、ヒスパニック系の構成比率は全国平均より約10ポイント低い^[37]。

アーカンソー州の人口重心はペリー郡の北東角となっている^[38]。

人種及び祖先

州北西部のオザークや中央部では、圧倒的にヨーロッパ系アメリカ人が多い。ミズーリ州との州境に近い最北西部オザークでは、ドイツ系、アイルランド系、イングランド系が多い。アイルランド系は主に、北アイルランド、スコットランド低地、および北イングランドから来たスコットランド系アイルランド人プロテスタントであり、アメリカ独立前に渡ってきた者達の子孫である。イングランド系とスコットランド系アイルランド人移民はアメリカ南部の田園部や山岳地に入植した。イギリス系アメリカ人は州内全域で見られる^[39]。アフリカ系アメリカ人は主に南部と東部に住んでいる。

アメリカ人の祖先を持つと申告している者の多くは、実際にはイギリス系が多く、幾らかはスコットランド・アイルランド系であるが、多くの場合州昇格以前から州内に住んでおり、単純にアメリカ人と申告するか、自身の祖先を知らないかである。その祖先は13植民地時代に遡り、そのためにアメリカ人を申告している。アイルランド系を申告する者の多くはスコットランド・アイルランド系である^[42]^[43]^[44]^[45]。

言語

2000年現在、5歳以上のアーカンソー州民の93.8%は自宅で英語を話し、4.5%はスペイン語を話している。0.7%がその他のインド・ヨーロッパ語を話し、0.8%がアジア系言語、その他が0.2%である。

^ The name Arkansas has been pronounced and spelled in a variety of fashions. The region was organized as the Territory of Arkansaw on July 4, 1819, but the territory was admitted to the United States as the state of Arkansas on June 15, 1836. The name was historically [ˈɑːrkənsɔː], [ɑːrˈkænzəs], and several other variants. In 1881, the Arkansas General Assembly passed the following concurrent resolution, now Arkansas Code 1-4-105 (official text):
Whereas, confusion of practice has arisen in the pronunciation of the name of our state and it is deemed important that the true pronunciation should be determined for use in oral official proceedings.

And, whereas, the matter has been thoroughly investigated by the State Historical Society and the Eclectic Society of Little Rock, which have agreed upon the correct pronunciation as derived from history, and the early usage of the American immigrants.

Be it therefore resolved by both houses of the General Assembly, that the only true pronunciation of the name of the state, in the opinion of this body, is that received by the French from the native Indians and committed to writing in the French word representing the sound. It should be pronounced in three (3) syllables, with the final "s" silent, the "a" in each syllable with the Italian sound, and the accent on the first and last syllables. The pronunciation with the accent on the second syllable with the sound of "a" in "man" and the sounding of the terminal "s" is an innovation to be discouraged.

Citizens of the state of Kansas often pronounce the Arkansas River as [ɑːrˈkænzəs ˈrɪvər], in a manner similar to the common pronunciation of the name of their state.
