内でDNA二重鎖を折りたたんでいるタンパク質複合体DNA物理的化学的な損傷から守っている。

コアヒストンはH2Ax2, H2Bx2, H3x2, H4x2の8量体であり、この周り146塩基1)DNA巻きつき、ヌクレオソームを形成する。ヌクレオソームあたり200塩基対DNA含まれ粒径は約11nmである。

ヌクレオソームnucleosome)は、真核生物におけるDNAのパッケージングの基本的単位であり、クロマチンの基本要素である。ヌクレオソームは、ヒストン八量体 (histone octamer) とその周囲に巻きついたDNAから構成される[1]。ヒストン八量体はヒストンH2AH2BH3H4各2コピーずつから成る。
