ノースヨークシャーのライ川沿いにあるリーヴォ修道院の遺跡。

エセルレッドは、 1110 年にノーサンブリア州ヘクサムで^[1]エイラフの 3 人の息子の 1 人として生まれ、ヘクサムの聖アンドリュー教会の司祭であり、彼自身はダーラムの会計係である別のエイラフの息子だった。 ^[2] 1095 年、クレアモント評議会は、司祭の息子の叙階を禁止した。これは、恩恵の継承を終わらせるために部分的に行われた。 ^[3]彼は、聖ブリジッドの聖人伝を彼に送ったダーラムのローレンスによって部分的に教育された可能性がある。
