「ザ・ウォーター・イズ・ワイド」の歌詞として広まっているもののいくつかは、『Folk Songs For Solo Singers』に収録されているが、ほかにも数多くのバージョンが、印刷出版され、歌われている。 The water is wide, I cannot get o'er. And neither have I the wings to fly. Build me a boat that can carry two, And both shall row, my love and I. A ship there is and she sails the seas. She's loaded deep, as deep can be; But not as deep as the love I'm in And I know not if I sink or swim. I leaned my back up against a young oak Thinking he was a trusty tree But first he bend and then he broke And so did my false love to me. O love is handsome and love is fine And loves a jewel while it's new But love grows old and waxes cold And fades away like the morning dew. ユルゲン・クロス (Jürgen Klos) は、この歌詞の1番が「I'm Often Drunk And Seldom Sober」（1780年ころ）に、2番が「The Seamans leave taken of his sweetest Margery」（1660年ころ）に、3番が「Oh Waly, Waly, Gin Love Be Bonny」（1724年ころに出版された時点で、既に「古い」歌とされていた）に、4番が「Hey trollie lollie, love is jolly」（1620年ころ）に、それぞれ由来することを突き止めている。しかしクロスも、1905年以前に、この歌詞が歌われていた旋律を突き止めることはできなかった。
