万里の長城解体報道

万里の長城解体報道（ばんりのちょうじょうかいたいほうどう）は、1899年にアメリカ合衆国で流れた中国関連報道の1つである。1899年6月、「中国政府が万里の長城を解体し、道路に転用することを検討している」とデンバーの地方紙が報じた。実際にはそのような事実はなかったが、記事の内容は転載されて全世界に拡散した。1939年にこの報道が義和団の乱の原因となったとする記事が雑誌に掲載された。報道と乱との関連は立証されていないが、しばしば史実として取り上げられている。

- ^ デンバー発の記事が捏造であることを考えると、ルイスの家族の談話が取れたり、家族が構想の存在を認めたりするのはおかしいが、事情は不明である。Fedler (1989)はフランク・C・ルイスという名の技術者が実際にシカゴに住んでいたのだとしている。
- ^ ただし、ヘンリー・W・ウォーレンはこの年の11月26日にセントルイスで説教をしていたという記録もあり[20]、同一人物であればずっと南アメリカにいたわけでもないことになる。
- ^ Fedler (1989)も、他の3紙については掲載面まで特定しているが、『ロッキー・マウンテン・ニュース』の該当記事の掲載有無については言及していない。
