NGC 5315は、コンパス座の南部に位置する惑星状星雲である。中心星は、コンパス座α星の西南西5.2度の位置にあり、見かけの等級は14.2である。中心星を取り巻く星雲の見かけの等級は9.8であり、倍率200倍超えでのみ環として観察できる[1][6]。この星雲は、天文学者のラルフ・コープランドによって、1883年に発見された[2]。
中心星のスペクトル分類は WC4 であり、水素が欠乏していることを示す。また、中心星の有効温度は、76000 - 79000Kである[7]。地球からの距離は正確にはわからないものの、6,500光年と推定される[4]。
この星雲はわずかに楕円形で複雑な構造をしており、環はやや乱れていて、炭素の存在量が典型的で窒素は存在比がわずかに多いことを示す[4][8]。視線速度の研究から、中心星は連星系である可能性が指摘されている。星雲中のs過程起源の元素の存在量が低い（s過程濃縮が欠如している）ことから、伴星との相互作用によって恒星の漸近巨星分枝の段階が切り捨てられたか、恒星の質量が小さく3回目の汲み上げ効果がなかったか、あるいはAGB過程における恒星のs過程がエンベロープによって大幅に薄まった可能性が指摘されている[7]。
