カンバーランドはかつてメリーランド州で2番目に大きな都市だったので、「女王の都市」と呼ばれてきた。「南部が始まる所」とも呼ばれることが多い。戦略的な位置にあるので、1800年代前半を通じて西への移民の道に進むために、準備を行い出発する地点となり、アメリカ独立戦争後にオハイオ領土やルイジアナ買収地への入植を可能にしてきた。カンバーランド大都市圏は国内でも最貧クラスの都市圏であり、一人当たり年間収入では318都市圏のうちの第305位である[3]。
