胸椎に続く５個の椎骨で、その椎体はすべて椎骨の中でもっとも強大である。椎体の幅は下位のものほど大きく、高さは第３～第４腰椎で最大である。椎弓も強大で、椎孔の形は三角形状である。腰椎の横突起は本来、この部の肋骨に相当するもので肋骨突起といい、本来の横突起は上関節突起の外側から後方に向かう小さな隆起として残っており、乳頭突起とよぶ。また、肋骨突起の根部の後面には下方に向かう小突起があり、副突起というのが、これも本来の横突起の一部が変形したものである。腰椎の棘突起は幅が広く、短い。側方から見ると、四角な板状でほぼ水平に後方へ突出している。

人体解剖学における腰椎（ようつい、lumbar vertebrae）は、胸郭と骨盤の間にある5つの椎骨。脊柱の最大の部位であり、横突起内に横突孔がないこと（頸部にのみ存在する）および椎体の側面に関節面がないこと（胸部にのみ存在する）を特徴とする。上からL1-5と書かれる。体の重量を支え、動きを可能にする役割がある。
