ERPとは、企業の各種の基幹業務を統合的に行うことである。ERPを実現するソフトはERPパッケージと呼ばれている。
企業の基幹業務には、財務管理や生産管理、販売管理、人事管理などがある。企業では、業務ごとにコンピュータシステムを構築して効率化することも可能であるが、システムやデータが、それぞれ連携していない場合がある。そのため、ある業務システムでは最適と判断して設定した数値が、他の業務ではマイナス要因になることも考えられる。
ERPでは、それぞれの基幹業務を統合的に行うことで、業務ごとの部分最適から、全社での全体最適を目指す業務運営へ移行することができる。
ERPの導入には、業務の見直しのような事前のコンサルティングが不可欠なため、費用は数千万円から数億円単位に上ることも少なくないが、最近では、中小企業でも導入しやすいERPパッケージも増えている。

エンタープライズ・リソース・プランニング（英: enterprise resource planning、ERP）とは、企業全体を経営資源の有効活用の観点から統合的に管理し、経営の効率化を図るための手法・概念のこと。多くの場合、リアルタイムで、ソフトウェアとテクノロジーによって仲介される。企業資源計画（きぎょうしげんけいかく)と呼ぶこともある。これを実現するための統合型（業務横断型）ソフトウェア（統合基幹業務システム）を「ERPパッケージ」と呼ぶ。
