ロバート・アンスン・ハインライン（Robert Anson Heinlein、1907年 7月7日 - 1988年 5月8日）は、アメリカのSF作家。SF界を代表する作家の一人で「SF界の長老（the dean of science fiction writers）」とも呼ばれ^[1]、影響を受けたSF作家も数多いが、物議を醸した作品も多い。科学技術の考証を高水準にし、SFというジャンルの文学的質を上げることにも貢献した。他のSF作家がSF雑誌に作品を載せるなか、ハインラインは1940年代から自分の作品を「サタデー・イブニング・ポスト」等の一般紙に載せた。この結果としてSFの大衆化が進んだのは、ハインラインの功績の一つである。SF小説でベストセラーを産んだ最初の作家でもある。アイザック・アシモフ、アーサー・C・クラークと並んで、世界SF界のビッグスリーとも呼ばれていた^[2]^[3]。アンスン・マクドナルド（Anson MacDonald）、ライル・モンロー（Lyle Monroe）などの名義で執筆していた時期もある（いずれも中・短編）。

^ 保守的な選挙区で民主党左派の候補として奮闘したが、民主党の予備選挙で敗れた（For Us, The Living: A Comedy of Customs 2004年版のあとがき247ページ）。そのころコンラート・ヘンラインの名が新聞の見出しに出たことも影響したとしている。
^ 1つはポール・ディラックと反物質についての記事で、もう1つは血液の化学についての記事である。前者は Paul Dirac, Antimatter, and You という題で、後に Expanded Universe に収録された。この中でディラック方程式を間違って紹介しており、科学の普及者としての一面をよく表しているとともに物理学の素養のなさも露呈している。
^ ハインラインがプライバシーを重視していたことは For Us, the Living などの小説にも現れているが、その行動にも現れていた。ハインラインは彼の作品を分析したアレクセイ・パンシンと諍いを起こしている。ハインラインはパンシンが「彼の行動を覗き込み、プライバシーを侵害している」として、パンシンを告発し、パンシンへの協力を取りやめた。ハインラインはパンシンの出版社に警告の手紙を出している。1961年のワールドコンに招待された際の講演で核シェルターを作って未登録の武器を隠すことを主張し、実際に自宅に核シェルターを作っている。ヌーディストでもあったため、サンタ・クルーズの自宅の周囲にフェンスを張り、『異星の客』に影響された人々に覗かれないようにした。年を経るに従って徐々にかつての左翼政治への関与を隠すようになり、サム・モスコウィッツがそうした情報を含む伝記を出版しようとするのを全力で阻止しようとした。Enter.net
^ チャールズ・マンソンが『異星の客』に影響を受けていたという都市伝説があるが、マンソンの仲間の中にはそれを読んでいた者もいたが、マンソン本人は読んでいなかったと述べている。しかし、ハインライン夫妻がマンソン・ファミリーを特に警戒していたことが Grumbles from the Grave (Reason.com) に収録されているバージニア・ハインラインの手紙からうかがわれる。Church of All Worlds は明らかに『異星の客』の影響を受けて設立されている。ハインラインはその教祖と個人的にやり取りし、機関紙を購読していたが、教団設立には全く関わっていない（Heinleinsociety.org 参照）。
