He earned an MPA from Harvard University, an MPhil from Kyoto University, and a BA
from the University of Tokyo.
He serves as Executive Advisor and Chief Strategist at the Kyoto Institute of Philosophy[2], Executive Advisor to Yamauchi No.10 Family Office (Nintendo's founding family office) [3], and Special Committee Member for the 2050 Grand Vision Council of the Kyoto City Government[4]. Biography
Born in Kyoto and then raised into a single-mother household in Toyama Prefecture, a typical countryside in Japan, with no prior family history of university education, he gained admission to the University of Tokyo as a first generation college student[6].
While enrolled, he passed the National Qualification Exams for Government Official, which is broadly known the most difficult national exam in Japan, as an Economics major after just four weeks of self-study although his major was philosophy[7]. Upon graduating from the Faculty of Letters with an BA, he became an official at the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI), where he worked on mission-critical policies directly under the cabinet including Abenomics growth strategy[8]. He then joined Aillis, Inc., an early stage medical AI startup, as Executive Officer, and works as Chief Creative Officer in charge of innovation as of 2023[9]. Aillis won the Grand Prix at the Startup World Cup 2023, emerging as the champion among over 30,000 applicants from around the globe[10][11], and received the Gold Prize (Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Prize) at the 2023 Good Design Awards[12], Japan's most highly regarded design award.
In the meantime, he earned an MPhil from Kyoto University in 2022 and an MPA with the Certificate in Management, Leadership, and Decision Sciences from Harvard University[13], and co-authored a business case study about The Pokémon Company, focusing on its marketing strategy and management philosophy that established Pokémon as a global brand[14].
He serves as Executive Advisor and Chief Strategist at the Kyoto institute of Philosophy that was established by chairman of NTT, chairperson of HITACHI, chairman of Hakuhodo DY Group, and CEO of Yomiuri Shinbun Newspaper[15], and Executive Advisor to Yamauchi No.10 Family Office, Nintendo's founding family office[3]. Also, he is an outside director of Gotoschool, Inc., a startup for children with disabilities that received investment from the family office[16].
He moderated a session with James Robson, Director at Harvard Asia Center, Yuko Nagayama, an architect in charge of Japan's pavilions for Dubai 2020 EXPO and Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025 at the institute's inauguration symposium[17].
Personal Life
His personal life is featured at Harvard Kennedy School's official website[18] as follows:
- Born into a single-mother household in a countryside, where no one in the family had attended university, he enrolled in the University of Tokyo as a first-generation college student through grueling study lasting up to 16 hours a day—so intense they caused a stress fracture in their spine.
- At the University of Tokyo, however, he was struck by despair, realizing the vast financial and social advantages enjoyed by their peers from the upper echelon of society. This experience fueled his aspiration to overcome their upbringing by attending Harvard Universityー15 years after, he eventually fulfilled this dream.
- After graduating from college, he dedicated himself to both work and research, sometimes for up to 20 hours a day, which eventually led to the onset of sudden hearing loss.
- He aims to apply East Asian and Japanese philosophy to global agendas such as "sustainability" by offering opportunities to revisit the foundational conceptual frameworks.
- He promotes collaboration between Harvard University, the founding Yamauchi family of Nintendo, and the Kyoto Institute of Philosophy. This includes establishing the Yamauchi Japan Initiative[19].
He is an adept Kendo player with 27 years of experience as of October 2023 and hold 4th dans.
