詳細は2016年東京オリンピック構想、ヒロシマ・オリンピック構想を参照 2020年夏季オリンピック国内招致に向け、東京都と広島市が名乗りをあげていた。震災後に行われた第17回統一地方選挙後、東京都知事に再任した石原慎太郎は今後の招致活動について明確に答えなかった が、広島市長に新任した松井一實は震災の影響も配慮し招致断念を表明した。
