全ての古代ギリシア・ローマにおける神殿は通常、小広間(Cella)に偶像があった。小広間へ行くのは様々だったが、司祭とは別方向からで、少なくとも一般的崇拝者の一部は時おり小広間に行くことが可能だった。けれども神への犠牲は通常、神殿の境内の外側にある祭壇(ギリシャ語でTemenos)で行われた。偶像の中には見るのが簡単で、主要観光スポットと呼ばれたものもあった。像は通常だと神の立像で、元々は実物サイズよりも小さな形だったが、典型的にはおおむね実物大である。中には実物の何倍もの大きさで、大理石やブロンズで作られ、特に高名なクリセラファンティーネ彫像は目に見える体の部分には象牙を使い、衣服や木製の枠組みの周囲には金を使用している(横の写真参照)。
最も有名なギリシアの偶像もこのタイプで、オリンピアのゼウス像とペイディアスが作ったアテネのパルテノン神殿のアテーナー・パルテノス像があるが、どちらの巨大な彫像も完全に失われてしまった。デルポイからは2つのクリセラファンティーネ像の断片が発掘された。一般に偶像は、識別できる象徴物を保持または身に付けており、これは神殿と他の場所における別の多くの彫像とを区別する方法の1つである。
アクロリスは別の複合型で、こちらは木製の体を持つコスト節約型のものである。ゾアノンは原始的かつ象徴的な木製の像で、恐らくヒンドゥー教のリンガ(lingam)に匹敵する。これらの多くは古代より保管され、崇められていた。 ローマの大理石の複製品からよく知られているギリシア彫像の多くはもともと神殿の偶像だったもので、バルベリーニのアポローンなど一部の例は確実に識別されている。ごく僅かに実際のオリジナルが現存し、例えばブロンズ像でピレウスのアテーナー(高さ2.35m、ヘルメット含む)がある。
ギリシア神話やローマ神話において、「パラディウム」は都市の安全に関わると言われていた非常に古代の像であり、特にオデュッセウスとディオメーデースがトロイの城塞から盗んだ木製の像については、後にアイネイアースによってローマに運ばれた(ローマの物語は、ウェルギリウスの『アエネーイス』や他の作品に関連が見られる)。
