パケット通信(パケットつうしん)は、端末からのデータをPAD (Packet Assembly Disassembly) でパケットに変換して伝送し、交換設備の記憶装置に蓄積し、中継伝送路の空いている時間に送り出し、受信側の交換機の記憶装置に蓄積された後送出され、PADで元のデータに変換され相手先の端末に届く通信方式である。蓄積交換(通信方式)とも呼ばれる。長いメッセージが短いパケットに細分される通信ネットワークを介してメッセージを送信する方法の一つである[1]
