世界中の至る所で人間が動物に襲われる事件が発生。アフリカのライオン、日本のコウモリ、ペットのネコなどが、異常な行動をみせはじめる。生物学者、ジャーナリスト、行動学専門家、病理学専門の獣医が謎を解こうと試みるが、動物たちの暴走は止められない。

DVDについて
日本ではパラマウント・ピクチャーズから『ZOO-暴走地区-』のタイトルでDVDが発売されている[37]。なお、本編の中で出演者が福島第一原子力発電所事故について言及しているシーンがあるが、日本国内で発売されているDVDでは無音にするなどの措置が取られている。発売元は時事通信の取材に対し、「ナーバスな問題であるため、音声などをカットした」と説明している[38]。
