アマルテア・ゴサマー環
アマルテア・ゴサマー環は非常に希薄な構造で、半径約18万2,000 km(2.54木星半径)のアマルテアの軌道から半径約12万9,000 km(1.80木星半径)までを占める[2][9]。より明るいハロ環と主環があるため、内側の境界は明瞭ではない。環の厚さは約2,300kmで、おおよそアマルテアの軌道近くから木星の方向に向かって緩やかに減少している[4]。アマルテア・ゴサマー環は、上端と下端の付近で最も明るく、また木星の方向に向かうに従って明るくなっていく[28]。環の外端は比較的明瞭であり[2]、環の明るさがアマルテアの軌道のすぐ内側で急に落ちるが[2]、衛星の軌道を若干超え、テーベとの4:3の共鳴軌道にまで達する[13]。前方散乱では、環の明るさは主環の約30分の1である[2]。後方散乱では、ケック天文台[4] とハッブル宇宙望遠鏡の掃天観測用高性能カメラ[11] でしか捉えられていない。後方散乱の画像からは、環のさらなる構造が観測され、明るさのピークはアマルテアの軌道のすぐ内側、環の上端と下端にあることが分かる[4][13]。
2002年から2003年、ガリレオはゴサマー環を2度通過した。その際、探査機のダストカウンターは、0.2–5 µm の大きさの粒子を検出した[29][30]。さらにスタースキャナーは、アマルテアの近くに1km以下の小さな天体を検出した[31]。これらは、衛星に衝突した塵が集まってできたものかもしれない。
ゴサマー環の地上からの観測やガリレオの写真、直接の塵の測定によって、塵の大きさの分布は主環の塵の大きさを表す冪乗則と同じ式で、q = 2 ± 0.5 となることが分かった[11][30]。この環の光学的深さは約 10−7 で、主環よりも小さいが、塵の質量は 1017–1019 kg と同程度である[6][20][30]。
テーベ・ゴサマー環
テーベ・ゴサマー環は、木星の環で最も希薄である。テーベの軌道である半径22万6,000 km(3.11木星半径)から12万9,000 km(1.80木星半径)まで広がる[2][9]。より明るい主環とハロ環があるため、内側の境界は不明瞭である[2]。この環の厚さは、テーベの軌道付近で約8,400kmであり、木星に近づくに従って緩やかに減少する[4]。アマルテア・ゴサマー環と同様に、テーベ・ゴサマー環は、上端と下端の付近で最も明るく、また木星の方向に向かうに従って明るくなっていく[28]。また、外側の境界はそれほど明瞭ではなく、1万5,000km以上に広がっている[2]。テーベの軌道を超えるとほとんど見えないが、28万km(3.75木星半径)まで広がっており、Thebe Extensionと呼ばれている[2][30]。前方散乱では、テーベ・ゴサマー環は、アマルテア・ゴサマー環の3分の1程度の明るさに見える[2]。後方散乱は、ケック天文台でしか捉えられていないが[4]、テーベの軌道のすぐ内側に明るさのピークが見える[4]。2002年から2003年、ガリレオのダストカウンターは、アマルテア・ゴサマー環と同じ 0.2–5 µm の大きさの粒子を検出し、この結果は、画像からも確認された[29][30]。
テーベ・ゴサマー環の光学的深さは、約 3 × 10−8で、アマルテア・ゴサマー環の3分の1程度であるが、塵の合計質量はほぼ同じ 107–109 kg である[6][20][30]。しかし、粒子径の分布はアマルテア・ゴサマー環よりいくらか小さく、冪乗則の q の値は、q < 2である。Thebe Extension の q の値は、もっと小さいかもしれない[30]。
ゴサマー環の起源
ゴサマー環の塵は、本質的に主環やハロ環と同じ起源であり[20]、その源は、それぞれ木星の衛星アマルテアとテーベである。木星系から来た天体の高速の衝突で、その表面から塵の粒子が放出される[20]。これらの粒子は、当初は衛星と同じ軌道に留まっているが、ポインティング・ロバートソン効果により、徐々に螺旋状に内側に向って遷移する[20]。ゴサマー環の厚さは、衛星の軌道傾斜角に起因する垂直方向への偏位運動によって決まった[9]。この仮説は、環の断面積や木星に向かって厚さが減少すること、環の上下端が明るいこと等、観測されるほとんど全ての性質を自然に説明する[28]。
しかし、Thebe Extensionの存在や後方散乱で見える構造等、いくつかの性質は説明がついていない[9]。Thebe Extensionの1つの可能な説明は、木星の重力圏の電磁力の影響である。塵が木星の後の影に入ると、すぐにその電荷を失う。小さな塵の粒子は、部分的に惑星の自転と同期しているため、影を通る間は、外側に向かって移動し、テーベ・ゴサマー環の外側に広がるというものである[32]。同じ作用で、アマルテアとテーベの軌道の間で、粒子径の分布や環の明るさが小さいことも説明できる[30][32]。
アマルテアの軌道のすぐ内側にある明るさのピークやアマルテア・ゴサマー環の垂直方向の非対称性は、衛星のラグランジュ点[注 2] に粒子が捕捉されることによる[28]。テーベ・ゴサマー環でも同様である。この発見は、ゴサマー環内の粒子の運動が2種類に分けられることを示唆している。1つは、上記のように木星に向かってゆっくりと漂うもので、もう1つは、衛星との1:1の軌道付近に留まるものである[28]。
