ボストン虐殺事件（ボストンぎゃくさつじけん、英：Boston Massacre）は、1770年3月5日にイギリス領マサチューセッツ湾直轄植民地（現アメリカ合衆国マサチューセッツ州）のボストンにおいてイギリス駐屯軍の部隊8名と、約300名から400名になる市民が衝突し、群衆側の投石などに対してイギリス兵が発砲して市民5名を射殺した事件。この一件をポール・リビアやサミュエル・アダムズといった植民地の自治権を求める者たち（パトリオット）が「虐殺（massacre）」と呼称して大きく報じたため、この名前で呼ばれる。イギリス側は事件が発生した地名からキング・ストリート事件（キング・ストリートじけん、英：Incident on King Street）と呼ぶ[1]。

「ジョン・アダムズ」の記事における「ボストン虐殺事件」の解説
1770年、ボストンの町で起こった対立がイギリス軍兵士による市民5人の殺害という結果に至り、ボストン虐殺事件と呼ばれるようになった。この事件に関与した兵士達は逮捕され刑事告発をうけたが、法廷弁護士をなかなか見付けられなかった。最終的に兵士達はアダムズに弁護を頼んだ。アダムズは自分の評判が傷つけられることを恐れたが弁護を引き受けた。兵士達のうち6人は無罪とされた。2人の兵士が民衆に直接発砲しており、殺人罪で起訴されたが、過失致死傷罪で有罪とされただけだった。 歴史家のチナードに拠れば、兵士の1人トマス・プレストン大尉が弁護料として「象徴的な1ギニー」を払い、この事件でアダムズが得た唯一の報酬になったと主張した。しかしデビッド・マッカルーはそのアダムズに関する伝記で、18ギニーの弁護料以外受け取っていないと述べている。アダムズ自身の日記でも、プレストンが頭金10ギニーを払い、後に8ギニーを払ったのが「私が14日ないし15日の労働に対して受け取った金銭の全てであり、私が弁護した中でも最も消耗し骨の折れる仕事だった」と書いている。 アダムズの心配にも拘わらず、この裁判の準備を行っていた1770年6月にはマサチューセッツ議会（植民地議会）の議員に選出された。
