ベラ・フレックはニューヨークに生まれ、ハンガリーの作曲家バルトーク・ベーラ、オーストリアの作曲家アントン・ヴェーベルン、チェコの作曲家レオシュ・ヤナーチェクの三人の名から名づけられる[4]。フレックは元教師の母親の手によって育てられ、彼が40代になるまで父親と出会うことは許されなかった。フレックはテレビ番組"じゃじゃ馬億万長者"のテーマソングになっていた、アール・スクラッグスの演奏を聴き、バンジョーに興味を持つ。1973年、彼が15歳の時に祖父から、彼にとって初のバンジョーを贈られる[5][6]。その後、フレックはニューヨークの音楽芸術高校に入学し、ホルンを学ぶ。また、彼は、トニー・トリシカの下でバンジョーを習う学生でもあった。
高校卒業後すぐに、フレックはタスティー・リックスのバンドメンバーであるジャック・トットル、パット・エンライト、マーク・シャッツとの演奏のためにボストンに行った。この間の1979年、フレックはファースト・ソロアルバム"Crossing the Tracks"をリリース。このアルバムは彼のプログレッシブ・ブルーグラス作曲への最初の冒険であった。
フレックはベーシストのマーク・シャッツと共にボストンのストリートで演奏を行った。フレックとシャッツは1981年、ギタリストでボーカルのグレン・ローソン、マンドリン弾きのジミー・グッドローと共に、"スペクトラム"を結成。同年、サム・ブッシュがフレックをニューグラス・リバイバルへと勧誘。フレックは、そこから9年の間、ニューグラス・リバイバルで演奏をすることとなる。1987年には、新しいソロアルバム"Drve"をリリース。このアルバムは1988年にグラミー賞の新しい部門であった、ベスト・ブルーグラス・アルバムを受賞する。
1980年代、フレックとブッシュは、しばしばドック・ワトソンやメール・ワトソンと共に、様々なブルーグラス・フェスで演奏を行った。最も有名なものは、テルライド・ブルーグラス・フェスである。
