アバカス（英: abacus）は、棒または溝に沿ってカウンター（となる玉）をスライドさせて計算を実行するための器具^[2]。計算をする目的で使うシンプルな道具であり、玉（ビーズ）が滑るワイヤーあるいは溝が並んだ枠組みで構成されているもの^[3]。

^ そのおかげで、（大昔は学校に行けない人々は多かったわけだが）そもそも学校で算数をしっかりと学んだことがないような教育水準の人でも、そろばんを使えば計算作業がかなり理解しやすかった。学校で算数を学んだことがなくても、またわざわざそろばん学校で教えてもらわなくても、素人が素人に計算方法を伝授することもできた。
^ 昭和30年代ころまでに青年期を迎えた人は、「1を表す玉（一玉）が5つ」のそろばんの使い方を知っている。（彼らの親や祖父母、つまり明治時代や大正時代を生きた人々から教えられた。）平成時代以降の若者はほぼ全員、「1を表す玉（一玉）が5つ」のそろばんの使い方を親や祖父母から教わったこともないので、知らない。その結果、中国式のそろばんを、あろうことか「十六進用だった」などと誤解する。
^ 1938年以前にそろばんを習得した人々は、基本的には自分用の「上1、下5」そろばんを所有していて、それで訓練を受けてそれに馴染んでいたので、かなり長い年月そちらを使いつづけた。それが破損するなどして買い換えることになった時に、しかたなく「上1、下4」そろばんを買った。だが、「上1、下4」のほうが使い方がいくらか難しく、計算作業がシビアなので（「計算途中で、操作が難しければ、仮に、一玉を5個置く（こともできる）」という選択肢が無くなったので）、彼らは戸惑うことになった。
^ その一方で、「上1、下4」方式のそろばんは、初歩段階ではその操作の複雑さを感じさせたり、うっかり操作ミスをしてしまう確率も増すので、そろばんを嫌いになったり、挫折してしまう子供もそれなりの割合で生むようになった。
