バス会社
現在、マンハッタンのローカル・バスのほとんどは、ニューヨークシティ・トランジット・オーソリティおよびその子会社であるマンハッタン・アンド・ブロンクス・サーフェス・トランジット・オペレーティング・オーソリティ (en) によって運営されている。ルーズベルト・アイランド・オペレーティング・コーポレーション (en) はルーズベルト島内でRoosevelt Island Red Bus Serviceを運営している。
マンハッタンで最初のバス会社はフィフス・アベニュー・コーチ・カンパニー (en) で、1886年に5番街線 (en)（現M1ルート）の運営を開始した。ニューヨーク・レイルウェイズ (en) が1919年に幾つかの路面電車路線を廃止し始めた時、それに取って代わるバス路線（現在のルートM21やM22など）がニューヨーク市街路樹および建築物局 (New York City Department of Plant and Structures, DP&S) によって引き継がれた。1921年にはDP&Sは幾つかの他のバス路線（現在のルートM79やM96など）の運営を開始した。1933年、ルートM21以外のすべての路線はグリーン・バス・ラインズ (en) によって買収された。1935年、この会社は、買収した幾つかの路線をコンプリヘンシブ・オムニバス・コーポレーション (Comprehensive Omnibus Corporation) へと譲渡した。
ニューヨーク・シティ・オムニバス・コーポレーション (en) は、1936年にニューヨーク・レイルウェイズが廃止した路面電車の路線を継承するバス路線の運営を開始し、その他のグリーン・バス路線も買収した。またこの年に、この会社は、マディソン・アベニュー・コーチ・カンパニー (Madison Avenue Coach Company)（かつてのニューヨーク・アンド・ハーレム鉄道 (en) 路線）およびエイス・アベニュー・コーチ・コーポレーション (Eighth Avenue Coach Corporation)（かつてのエイス・アンド・ナインス・アベニュー鉄道 (Eighth and Ninth Avenue Railways) 路線）を買収し、1942年にはトライアングル・バス・コーポレーション (Triangle Bus Corporation)（現在のルートM21）を買収した。
1936年、NYCOおよびフィフス・アベニュー社は共通の所有者の傘下となった。1956年には、NYCOがサーフェス・トランスポーテーション・コーポレーション (en)（1941年より、かつてのサード・アベニュー鉄道 (en) 路線によって運営されていた）を買収し、これらは一つの会社に統合され、イッフス・アベニュー・コーチ・ラインズ (en) という名称となった。1962年のストライキ以降、フィフス・アベニュー社のシステムは新しく設立されたマンハッタン・アンド・ブロンクス・サーフェス・トランジット・オペレーティング・オーソリティ (en) へと譲渡された。
1933年、二つの関連会社が幾つかの路線の運営を開始した。コンプリヘンシブ・オムニバス・コーポレーション (Comprehensive Omnibus Corporation) はグリーン・バス・ラインズ (en) の幾つかの路線（現在のルートM22、M27、およびM50など）を取得した。イースト・サイド・オムニバス・コーポレーション (East Side Omnibus Corporation) は、かつてのセカンド・アベニュー鉄道 (en) の路線（現在のルートM15およびM31）の運営を開始した。この年、コンプリヘンシブ社は現在のルートM66の運営も開始した。1948年、ニューヨーク市交通委員会 (New York City Board of Transportation) はコンプリヘンシブ社とイースト・サイド社の路線を買収し、1953年にニューヨークシティ・トランジット・オーソリティへと移管した。1980年には、ニューヨークシティ・トランジット・オーソリティは、アベニューB・アンド・イースト・ブロードウェイ・トランジット・カンパニー (Avenue B and East Broadway Transit Company) が運営していた路線（現在のルートM9、もともとはDry Dock, East Broadway and Battery Railroadの路線として1932年に運行が始まった路線）を取得した。

ルートM2, M7, M14A/D, M15, M23, M42, M60, M79, M86, M96, M101, M102, M103およびM104は24時間営業である。他のバス路線は深夜（通常は0:00-500）の時間帯は走っていない。
