この酵素の基質は5β-コレスタン-3α,7α-ジオール、NADPH、H⁺とO₂で、生成物は5β-コレスタン-3α,7α,12α-トリオール、NADP⁺とH₂Oである。

組織名は5β-cholestane-3α,7α-diol,NADPH:oxygen oxidoreductase (12α-hydroxylating)で、別名に5β-cholestane-3α,7α-diol 12α-monooxygenase、sterol 12α-hydroxylase (ambiguous)、CYP8B1、cytochrome P450 8B1がある。
